What Is Diamond Painting?

Posted by Nicole Heather on

Diamond painting is a relatively new art form where it breaks images down into patterns, very similar to cross stitch. Small, glossy tiles are then applied to canvas to make the pattern.

The tiles which are often called rhinestones or drills, are colour matched to the DMC thread colours and are 2.5mm in size. One side of the tile is flat which is stuck onto the canvas whilst the other is 5D, giving the design a sparkling finish.

There are basically three types of diamond painting kits that you can get.

1. PARTIAL COVERAGE THAT IS PRE-PRINTED

This means that the kits are pre-printed and you only stick the diamonds to part of the canvas to finish the image. The symbols are printed onto the picture where you are to put the diamonds and corresponds to a symbol chart for each different colour.

2. FULL COVERAGE THAT IS PRE-PRINTED

These kits are pre-printed and you stick the diamonds the canvas to make the full image. The symbols are printed onto the picture where you are to put the diamonds and corresponds to a symbol chart for each different colour. Full coverage diamond kits give you the best end result.

3. FULL COVERAGE THAT USES A PATTERN AND BLANK GRIDDED CANVAS*

A pattern very similar to a cross stitch pattern is provided along with a blank gridded adhesive canvas. Think of the canvas as your fabric. You then use the pattern to make up the image from scratch.

All of the diamond painting kits supplied by Stitches To Stones are provided in this fashion. The pattern is emailed through to you in PDF format and the diamond painting supplies are shipped to you. All of the patterns at Stitches To Stones have been created from images that have been legally licensed. Our designs will provide you with many hours of fun and relaxation as they are all large projects. The larger the design canvas, the more detail in the final product.

The beauty of diamond painting is that not only does the activity produce some beautiful artwork that you can give to others as gifts or hold onto for yourself, but it’s also good for your mind and body. Very much like adult colouring books and puzzles, diamond painting as a hobby has many mental, emotional and intellectual health benefits.
